The CGD (and CAL) Cross Country season started strong on Thursday, August 27th at the Gowrie Country Club. Gowrie was a nice start to the season for a few reasons. First, the weather was cloudy and cool, lending itself to optimal running conditions. The course was also relatively flat. This meet was an open, with all runners competing in their gender groups without JV/Varsity distinctions. We approached this as a great way to have a new time trial against some strong competition.
I'm so proud of our boys team for their effort and team spirit. We have a lot of new runners to the team this year, and I know we'll show growth as the season progresses. Alex Rosenbaum was a medal winner at 19th place overall. Many of our boys placed within 30 seconds of a Top 30 finish, and I'm confident we can drop times to become more competitive. Our boys have a strong team mentality, and every single one of them cheered for girls along the course during their race. Six of our nine boys dropped significant times from their previous time trials. For some, this was their first official 5k race. I think everyone had something to celebrate!
Our girls performed very well, placing 3rd in team rankings (out of 8) with five finishing in the Top 25 (out of 78 individuals). Mekenzie Alberts took 4th, Claire Davis 11th, Shelby Engh 12th, Courtney Studer 23rd, and Angela Castro 24th. This was a strong start to an exciting season for Iowa girls running the 5k distance for the first time. Since the longer distance is new for girls, it's a great year to attempt to set course records across the state!
Our athletes have high goals for this season, and I know they can achieve them if they continue to put in the effort during practice and meets. Our next meet is closer to home at Webster City Links Course on Tuesday, September 1st, and we would love to have a big crowd to cheer us on!
(Parents and spectators: please send any action shots from meets our way so I can post them to the site!)
